Lead Process / Project Engineer

Key Responsibilities:

Engineering Design

•         Lead the engineering design of pilot plant and process test stand systems and the development of all supporting documentation, such as design drawings (e.g., PFDs, P&IDs), equipment and component specifications, control narratives, and datasheets.

•         Define design bases, operating envelopes, and commissioning plans for pilot systems.

•         Perform and/or review overpressure protection studies and pressure relief sizing in accordance with API and relevant jurisdictional codes.

•         Review and approve engineering documentation prepared by team members.

•         Lead and participate in hazard workshops when necessary (e.g., HAZOP, What-If).

•         Assist with scale-up cost estimation and process development.

Project Execution & Commissioning

•         Plan and execute the installation, commissioning, and start-up of pilot systems.

•         Manage other parties when necessary (e.g., vendors, fabricators, trades).

Team & Stakeholder Management

•         Supervise and mentor a team of junior process engineers.

•         Allocate tasks, review deliverables, and ensure adherence to project schedules and budgets.

•         Interface with clients regularly.

Operational Support

•         Provide engineering support during operating campaigns, including monitoring performance, troubleshooting issues, and implementing improvements.

•         Operate and monitor process systems (e.g., reactors, pumps, heat exchangers, compressors, RO systems, distillation columns, etc.).

•         Lead the development of operating manuals and emergency procedures.

•         Promote a strong safety culture.

Required Qualifications:

•         Eligible to work in Canada.

•         Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, or Process Engineering (P.Eng. designation required).

•         7+ years of relevant experience in process engineering, pilot plant, or industrial plant environments.

•         Experience with experimental setups, instrumentation, and lab or pilot plant operations, as well as commissioning, start-up, and operation of pilot or industrial systems.

•         Experience designing system relief philosophies (e.g., pressure safety valves, rupture discs, vent systems).

•         Good understanding of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics.

•         Proficiency with engineering documentation (PFDs, P&IDs, C&E matrices, Engineering Lists, datasheets).

•         Excellent communication skills, with the ability to mentor junior staff and coordinate cross-functional teams.

•         Strong safety mindset and familiarity with hazard analysis techniques (HAZOP, What-If, etc.).

Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills

•         Familiarity with hazardous area classification (e.g., API 505).

•         Knowledge of best commissioning practices (e.g., ASME B31.3).

•         Prior work in process research and development environments.

•         Understanding of required work activities across engineering disciplines for plant design.

Working Conditions

•         Primarily on-site, with regular field presence during installation and commissioning phases.

•         Involves physical work such as climbing platforms, inspecting piping systems, and witnessing pressure tests.

•         May require occasional travel to fabrication shops, client sites, or partner facilities.

Engineering Co-op

Competencies Required:

  • Chemical or mechanical engineering student who has completed at least 2 years of an engineering program
  • Strong attention to detail and critical thinking skills, with ability to adapt to change
  • High level of initiative and enthusiastic to learn more about engineering R&D work
  • Good time management, with the ability to organize, prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work with a multi-disciplinary team
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills
  • Able to lift at least 25lb
  • Chemical laboratory experience an asset
  • Minor construction / hands-on experience an asset

Salary: $3,000 - $4,000 per month
