Air Sensitive Specialty Chemical Protocol Optimization
Client Objective
AGEIAS’ client was developing a process to produce a specialty chemical for battery applications. The process chemistry is challenging: it is air- and moisture- sensitive; requires toxic gaseous reagents; and has high product purity targets. The client requested AGEIAS’s collaboration in developing and optimizing synthesis and workup protocols to meet scale and purity requirements for initial customer validation.

The AGEIAS Approach
Developing a scalable synthesis protocol while meeting stringent purity requirements requires extensive lab trials to identify the cause of deficiencies and test proposed solutions. To supplement the client’s own trial work, AGEIAS designed and built an in-house Schlenk line based set up with engineered safety monitoring and protocols. The setup was able to run accelerated trials while effectively managing hazards associated with toxic gaseous reagents and air- and moisture-sensitive chemistry.
Customer Value
AGEIAS was able to accelerate development work by conducting additional lab trials at multiple scales under safe and controlled conditions. The experimental results were used for troubleshooting process challenges to ultimately develop a protocol for larger lab scales that meet market-based purity specifications for customer validation. The insight gained allowed AGEIAS to begin scaling up their client’s process from lab to pilot.
